Sometimes a rentals scam is more like a "well it's not quite what we advertised" type of situation than it is an outright swindle. That's why it's important to get as many pictures as possible from the owner. If they have a nice listing, why shouldn't they be proud to show you the property from every conceivable angle? Of course, just because an owner doesn't have a slew of photographs doesn't mean they are trying to scam you. They just may not be the best salesmen around. Still, it doesn't hurt to ask for more photographs. The more information you have to go on, the better.
Finally, use a credit card to pay for any vacation rentals. This is just a good sense strategy to help you avoid getting scammed. If the time comes around and you realize that you aren't getting what you paid for, you can always dispute the charges with your credit card company. If you are a customer in good standing and you have a legitimate dispute, chances are good that the company will stand up for you.
