Why do People seem to try so hard to find fulfillment in things outside of themselves?

It really is an exercise in futility to try to find fulfillment or happiness or purpose outside of ourselves.  Writer after writer, person after person, teacher after teacher have given us this truth, yet we still look for validation of ourselves outside of ourselves, ignoring the advice of those whose experience has taught them one of the most important lessons available to human beings.  My personal fulfillment cannot come from my job performance or promotion or my material possessions or my relationships.  My personal fulfillment can come only through a strong sense of self, a strong respect for myself, and a recognition of my amazing personal potential--and true efforts to reach that potential.

Until we truly believe this, though, we'll continue to look for fulfillment in things and people outside of ourselves, and in times apart from our present.

Our fulfillment is up to us, and us only.  Only we can bring ourselves to a point at which we're at peace with who we are and what we're doing.  Only we can find a space in which the things that happen around us don't bring us down or put us in a bad mood or frustrate us to no end.

You've already been given all the gifts and abilities you need to live a fulfilling and beautiful life.  But are you looking for the treasure on some island somewhere far away, or are you mining the treasure in your heart and spirit?

A son and his father were walking on the mountains.
Suddenly, the son falls, hurts himself and screams: "AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
To his surprise, he hears the voice repeating,

Curious, he yells: "Who are you?"
He receives the answer: "Who are you?"
Angered at the response, he screams: "Coward!"

He looks to his father and asks: "What's going on?"
The father smiles and says: "My son, pay attention."
And then he screams to the mountain: "I admire you!"

The boy is surprised, but does not understand.

You have choices!

When you’re dealing with something that can’t be changed, you have choices.

You can choose to struggle, battle, and cling, and remain stuck—stuck in an unfavorable situation, with negative feelings. Or,  you can choose to accept the situation, let go of negative thoughts about it, and open up to a change in direction.

First ask yourself: Will any amount of thinking, forcing, or coaxing alter my situation? If the answer is no, accept that fact. Without acceptance, you’ll continue to fight, resist, and struggle, which will erode your joy and energy. On the other hand, accepting the situation for what it is and choosing to go with the flow will bring tranquility, peace, and lightness.

Next, ask yourself: Which thoughts and old beliefs do I need to let go of? Let go of any thoughts about the situation that are causing upsetting feelings; such as impatience, jealousy, fear, or anger. One way to do this is to trust that out of every situation, good will come. When you choose to believe that good will come out of every experience, you’ll soon discover that perceived obstacles are really blessings in disguise. Sometimes these obstacles serve to nudge you in a new direction—one that will open up your world to magnificent experiences. Sometimes they help you become a stronger, better, and wiser you. Take all the positives you can out of each experience and choose to leave the negative feelings behind.

Finally, ask yourself: In which new direction would I like to head? It’s important to understand that going with the flow doesn’t mean you drift aimlessly and allow the tide to determine where in your life you’ll end up. It’s fulfilling to decide where you want to go and then take the steps to get there.

Don't expect others to be responsible for your happiness and your success. You must take control and be in charge of your destiny and day-to-day situations. Take advice (most of the time it's free) and listen to what others have to say and what concerns they have; it's important to have different points of view. But always validate those words of wisdom with your own set of standards and make sure that the advice has meaning to your sense of reality.

You must understand yourself enough to know what you want in life and what desires you believe are worthwhile for your future. You need to depend upon yourself and your talents.
